Colden Common Primary School - Hampshire County Architects

Colden Common Primary School, in the village of Brambridge near Eastleigh was built to replace the SCOLA School destroyed by fire. It has a T shaped plan which contains the main reception and classroom wing between two large halls – the main school hall at one end and the music drama room at the other. It has a very dynamic form with oversailing ‘gull wing’ roofs and architectonic expression through the layering of rafters, glulam beams and posts. A brick plinth which runs around the school anchors the building and maintains a datum off which the sunscreens are cantilevered.

I assisted the project architect taking the scheme through from planning to completion in site. It was hugely enjoyable.

The scheme was reviewed in the Architects’ Journal February 1998 Issue. It attained 2nd place in the Brick Development Association Brick Awards 1998 and was shortlisted for the Galvanisers Association Galvanising Awards 1998.
